Norcross, Ga. - Poised to repeat as Conference Champions, the Southern Poly State University (SPSU) men's soccer team has been selected by the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) coaches as the favorite to capture the 2010 SSAC Men's Soccer Championship. In the challenging league competition last season, the Hornets finished first in the regular season with an impressive conference record of 7-0 and an overall record of 14-2-1 and advanced to the second round of the NAIA National Championship.
In points based on coaches' voting, this year is projected to be just as highly competitive as 2009. Second to SPSU's 97 points is last year's regular season runner-up, Auburn University at Montgomery (AUM) and William Carey University each compiling 85 points. William Carey, a Southern States newcomer, was voted only a single first-place vote behind AUM but was voted by the coaches within the Western division to overtake AUM. AUM finished the 2009 season with a 13-4-2 (6-1 SSAC) record while WCU, last year's Gulf Coast Athletic Conference champion, compiled a 13-4-3 record.
This year, thirteen teams will be competing for the regular season championship with eight teams qualifying for post season SSAC Tournament Championships. The first round of the SSAC Championship Tournament begins on Saturday, November 6 on the campuses of the four highest seeds, with the semifinals and championship game being held at the Sportsplex in Gulfport, Mississippi on Thursday, November 11 and Saturday, November 13, respectively. The winner and the runner-up of the tournament will receive the automatic bids to the NAIA National Championship.
