CLEVELAND, Tenn. -- Nikki Jackson had 23 points to lead the second-seeded Berry women's basketball team to a 65-51 win over No. 7-seed Auburn-Montgomery in the opening game of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Thursday afternoon at Lee's Paul Dana Walker Arena. Berry advances to Friday's semifinal game at 1 p.m. where it will face the winner between Emmanuel and Brenau.

Jackson was 9-for-11 from the floor in the game, including a 5-for-5 first half and helped lead Berry to the double-digit win. The Vikings were in a close game after a 9-4 run for AUM to start the second half made it a 38-36 game. However, Jackson hit a pair of free throw shots to stop the run and started the Vikings on a 14-2 that put the team out in front for good.

AUM started the game off well, making back-to-back three pointers to start the game up 6-0. The first three baskets in the game for the Lady Senators were three-point baskets by Brittany Moore as the Lady Senators led 9-2 early in the game. Moore finished the game 3-for-6 from behind the arc and, along with Mallory Yancey, had a team-best 13 points. Melanie Gess also had six first-half points and finished with 11 points coming off the AUM bench.

However, Berry also started the game hot from behind the arc going 5-for-10 in the first half, led by Erica Crumley and Lakisha Bryant who both hit a pair of long-distance shots in the first half. Crumley was the only other Berry player to finish in double-digits as she scored 10 points.

Mickey Duncan gave Berry its first lead 14-13 with an old-fashion three-point-play. That started Berry on a 12-5 run, which helped Berry to lead by as many as 10 points (34-24) and finish the half up 34-27.

AUM shot 36% from the floor for the game, while Berry mustered a 48.1% shooting effort. The Lady Vikings also out-rebounded the Lady Senators 37-25, including a 14-11 edge in offensive rebounds. Berry also controled the painted area out-scoring AUM 38-26.

The Lady Senators finish the season with a 12-18 record. Meanwhile, Berry, the No. 24-ranked team in the country, improves to 25-6. The women's tournament action continues all-day Thursday. Emmanuel and Brenau will play for a trip to the tournament semifinals at 3:30 p.m.
