MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Southern Wesleyan junior righthander Creighton McCallum scattered eight hits and didn't allow an earned run in a 2-1 victory over Brewton-Parker Thursday afternoon, keeping the Warriors alive in the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament hosted by Faulkner University.
The complete-game effort included five strikeouts and no walks as Southern Wesleyan, 33-20, advances to Friday's action, where it will play the loser of Thursday night's Auburn Montgomery-Southern Poly game at 4 p.m. Brewton-Parker's ends its season with a 21-30 record.
The Warriors grabbed a lead they would not relinquish in the bottom of the first inning, with Kody Hightower scoring on an RBI groundout by Kevin Brown. The lead was pushed to 2-0 in the bottom of the fifth when Hightower tripled in Robert Caldwell.
McCallum gave up an unearned run in the bottom of the ninth when Josh Sasser singled in Gary Stauff with the lone Baron run.
The Warriors won despite collecting only five hits in the game. Brewton-Parker was paced by a pair of hits each by Stauff and Baker Romine. Randy Jo Griffin took the loss for the Barons in six-plus innings of work.
