MONTGOMERY, Ala. - Southern Wesleyan senior righthander Jeff England may not have been the most celebrated pitcher in Friday afternoon's Southern States Athletic Conference tournament matchup with Southern Poly's Mark Doll, but he certainly was the most effective. England tossed a four-hit shutout, lifting the Warriors to a 9-0 victory over the Hornets and the SSAC pitcher of the year.
The victory sends Southern Wesleyan, 34-20, into a Saturday afternoon game against Faulkner. Southern Poly falls to 38-15, and must wait to see if it receives a bid to the NAIA Region XIII tournament.
The Warriors jumped on Doll, who entered the game with a 9-0 record, chasing the junior righthander after three innings of work. Kenneth Wagner doubled in two runs in the second, and Davey Blackburn and Kellen Kmiecik each doubled in a three-run third as the Warriors raced away. The Hornets managed only four singles off England, who struck out four and walked five.
Blackburn finished with three hits and three RBIs, while Craig Turner added a two-run home run and three RBIs for Southern Wesleyan, which collected 10 hits on the night.
