In the weekly Southern States Athletic Conference softball awards, Shorter College's Libby Munson and Lakyn Newton picked up both awards for Pitcher and Player of the Week. The awards come on the heel of Shorter's SSAC tournament title this weekend with a victory over Lee University.
Munson, a freshman from Suwanee, Ga., pitched in three of Shorter's four conference tournament games this week, pitching two complete game shutouts, and giving up only one run in 21 innings pitched. She struck out a week-high seven batters in Shorter's 1-0 victory over Brenau, and gave up her only run in the SSAC Championship game against Lee.
Newton, a senior from Greenville, Ala., batted a nearly perfect .889 on the week, going 8-for-9, with three runs, a double and three RBI. In the SSAC Championship game against Lee, she had three hits and two RBI in Shorter's 6-1 win.
