ATLANTA -- Following a comprehensive 3-1 win over No. 8 Auburn-Montgomery, Berry players swept the Southern States Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Player of the Week Awards on Mon. Berry's forward Teja Barkmann nabbed the SSAC Offensive Player of the Week Award, while center-back Mike Davis was named the SSAC Defensive Player of the Week.
Davis, who hails from Manchester, England, was a key part of the Berry defense as the Vikings had a 2-0 record during the week and picked up a conference win. Davis was solid in Berry's 4-1 win over Emmanuel during the middle of the week. The Berry defense allowed just two shots on goal during that match and only five for the week. Davis' best game came against AUM, in a match where the sophomore helped limit the Senators to just five shots on target for a total of just seven shots on goal over the two-match span.
The other catalyst for the Berry victories was senior striker Teja Barkmann, from Herne, Germany. Barkmann scored twice against Emmanuel to give him six goals for the season, the most on the Berry team. The senior then added a pair of assists against No. 8 AUM on Saturday to give him six points for the week and a team-best 15 points for the season.
It is the first time that Davis has won the award in his career. Barkmann gets the award for the first time this season, but the fourth time in his career as a member of the Vikings' soccer team.
