MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The second-seeded Berry women's soccer team dispatched of seventh-seed Faulkner 7-1 on Fri. at Ford Field to advance to the semifinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Soccer Tournament. With the win Berry is now 10-6-1 for the year. Faulkner finishes the season 9-6-1.
The Lady Vikings scored five first-half goals then cruised to victory over the Lady Eagles, in a game in which Berry out-shout the visitors 40-11. The Lady Vikings also enjoyed a 21-5 advantage in shots on goal.
Shannon Hackett gave Berry the start it wanted in the quarterfinal match, when she scored in the fifth minute of play. Laura Phyfer sent a bouncing ball forward to Hackett, who headed it forward behind the Faulkner defensive line and out-paced her defender to get a one-on-one with keeper Lisa Gallea. She calmly slipped the ball in at the near post for the 1-0 lead.
It didn't take long for the Vikings to double the lead. In the ninth minute Kate Ross' attempted cross did not find the head of a teammate, but instead tucked just inside the far post of the Faulkner goal for a goal and a 2-0 Berry lead.
The Vikings added three more goals in the first half to take a 5-0 lead into half time. Hackett had a long distance goal on an assist from Ally Byrd, which gave her three goals for the season. Courtney Weber scored her team-leading eighth goal of the season on a long shot off an assist from Hackett.
Not to be out-done Ross added a second goal to join Weber as the team's joint leading-scorer with eight goals on the season. Weber and Viktoria Frost assisted the Ross goal. Frost leads the team with six assists this season.
Berry added another goal just after half time, when Kerri McGinnins unleashed a long-distance effort from a Sheena McGowan assist.
The Berry offense forced 13 saves out of Gallea in the Faulkner goal. Gallea is fifth in the conference in saves per-game. The Eagles also boast the conference's leading goal-scorer in Nicole Jagt. She got on the score sheet in the 67th minute, when she took a quick shot from a free kick, while Berry was still trying to set its wall. It was her 20th goal of the season.
The Vikings responded with a goal in the 73rd minute when Kristen Brooks unleashed yet another shot from outside the 18-yard area that beat Gallea.
A total of 23 different players saw action for Berry. That included three different goalkeepers. Vanessa Zimmermann started had one save as she kept the ball out of the nets in the first half. Paige Banham came in a the half and had a save, while surrendering only the Jagt free kick goal. Rebekah Bullock, sister of Berry starting keeper Daniel Bullock, played the final 17 minutes of the match and made one save.
With the win Berry will now host No. 6-seed Auburn-Montgomery, which upset third-seeded Brenau 1-0 earlier today, in the semifinal round on Tues. (Nov. 11) at Ford Field. The Lady Vikings and Lady Senators are classic rivals that have met in 10 one-goal games over the years.
Last year the two teams also played in the conference semifinals a game that was decided in penalty kicks after the two teams finished tied 1-1 after 110 minutes of play. Zimmermann made a key penalty save to win the match for the Lady Vikings.
The time for this year's semifinal match has not yet been announced.
