MOUNT BERRY, Ga. -- The Berry men's soccer team advanced 3-1 over Southern Wesleyan in the quarterfinals of the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament Sat. at Ford Field.  The Vikings improve to 11-6-1 with the win, while the Warriors finish the season at 9-7-2.

"This was a good win for us over a team that beat us during the regular season," said head coach Richard Vardy. "We are excited to advance and are eager face our next opponent."

That opponent will be top-seeded Shorter, which advanced today 3-0 over No. 8-seed Emmanuel. Berry will play Shorter at Darlington Academy at 2 p.m. on Wed., Nov. 12. Earlier this season the two teams met in a classic match that ended in a 4-3 overtime win for the Hawks.

Jorg Bergmann gave Berry the 1-0 lead in the first half at the 32nd minute mark. He combined with Stefan Wolf to find an opening inside the SWU penalty-area. He then slotted the ball into the near post to open the scoring.

Mark Bloom doubled the Berry lead in the 37th minute, scoring what turned out to be the match-winning goal. The sophomore was at the back-post to turn Dino Ceric's driven pass into the goal for a 2-0 lead heading into the half.

The Vikings stretched the lead to 3-0 less than two minutes after the half. Sourosh Amani was pulled down inside the penalty-area. Senior Ben Popple stepped up to take the penalty-kick and converted into the top right corner for his first goal of the year.

Berry out-shot Southern Wesleyan 23-5 for the game, however the Vikings only managed a 5-3 edge in shots on goal. The Vikings also had an 8-3 advantage in corner kicks.

The two teams traded penalty kicks in the second half. Marco Ruggiero was called for a foul inside the Berry penalty area and Bryan Horton converted the spot kick for the Warriors.

Berry goalkeeper Daniel Bullock recorded two saves in the win. Southern Wesleyan keeper Mitch McKay also had two saves in defeat.
