Vic Mitchell receiving a plaque for 300 wins
Rome, Ga. - It was certainly a memorable night for the
Shorter College women's basketball team. With a 63-54 win over Southern
States Athletic Conference foe Reinhardt College, head coach Vic
Mitchell secured his 300th Shorter win, and four-year senior Nicole
Frechette shared the spotlight by passing the all-time Lady Hawks
rebound mark.
In his 19th season as head coach for the Lady Hawks, Vic Mitchell is on
the verge of compiling back-to-back 20-win seasons, as Shorter improved
to 19-10 (13-6 in the SSAC) with the victory. After coming to Shorter
in 1990 from Reinhardt College, Mitchell won the 94-95 regular season
conference championship, and in 2001-02 advanced to the NAIA National
Tournament, finishing the season ranked 25th in the nation. Shorter
president Dr. Harold Newman presented Coach Mitchell with a plaque
following the game for his 300th victory.
"Everyone at Shorter is very proud of Vic for this huge achievement,"
said Shorter athletic director Bill Peterson. "He provides great
leadership for not only the basketball program, but for all of
athletics. We are pleased and excited to see him honored this way."
Three seasons after Shorter advanced to the national championship,
Nicole Frechette made her appearance as a freshman with 149 rebounds.
After her sophomore season with 225 and her junior season with 223, she
was sitting at 279 as a senior this year for a total of 876. Frechette
led the team in tonight's win with 19 points and 14 rebounds (her
second consecutive double-double) to put her career rebound number at
890, two higher than previous record holder and Shorter 2008
Hall-of-Fame inductee Tramaine Paul, who had 888 from 1998-2002.
"She is the best defensive player I've ever coached," said Mitchell,
regarding Frechette. "She is constantly getting double-doubles, she
alters shots without fouling out - which is key - and she deserves to
hold this record. "
