ROME, Ga. -- Nicole Frechette had 19 points and 13 rebounds to help lead the Shorter College Lady Hawks to a 53-50 win over fifth-seeded Emmanuel in the opening game of the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Basketball Tournament. The Lady Hawks are now 20-11 and advance to the conference semifinals, while the Lady Lions finish the year 17-13.
 

Emmanuel led 37-34 at the half, before Shorter opened the second half on a 10-0 run. Frechette sparked the run with 11 points and eight rebounds after the intermission. Allison Danner also gave the Lady Hawks 10 points off the bench, while SSAC Player of the Year Katarina Martinovic was held to just seven points and eight rebounds.

Tenea Mann led Emmanuel with 17 points and nearly hit a three-point shot as time expired that would have tied the game. Jasmine Barner had 13 points for the Lady Lions and Emmanuels' Mallory Hill scored 10 points.

Shorter will play the winner of the game between No. 1-seed Lee and No. 8-seed Brewton Parker in the semifinals tomorrow at 2 p.m. in Berry's Steven J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center.
