ROME, Ga. -- No. 7-seed Southern Polytechnic hit 12 three-point baskets to claim the first upset of the Southern States Athletic Women's Basketball Tournament 53-50 over No. 2-seed AUM on Thursday. The Lady Hornets improve to 19-13 for the season, while the loss drops the Lady Senators to 20-8 on the year.
Ray Donee' Jones was 5-for-10 from three-point range and finished as the game's leading scorer with 18 points to lead the Lady Hornets. Dione Parks added 10 points for SPSU, while Crystal Davis gave the seventh-seeded Hornets eight points and a game-high 10 rebounds, as SPSU out-rebounded AUM 41-34.
 
Cassie Moore led AUM in scoring with 12 points, while Kala Smith and Carlie Ainsworth both finished with 10 points each. Smith stepped to the line with a chance to tie the game with 16 seconds left in the game, but failed to convert.
 
The Lady Hornets advance to the SSAC Tournament semifinals tomorrow at 4 p.m. at Berry's Steven J. Cage Athletic and Recreation Center. SPSU will play the winner of the Berry vs Brenau game that gets underway at 6 p.m. Thursday.
