KANSAS CITY, Mo.-Robert Johnson had 19 points and seven rebounds to lead Auburn University at Montgomery to an 83-67 win over William Jewell College and into the round of eight at the NAIA National Tournament.

 

 

The Senators shot 54 percent from the field in the first half, but trailed 34-31 at the break. The Senators came out in the second half and continued to shoot the ball well and outscored William Jewell 27-12 in the first 10 minutes of the half to pull away.

 

The game plan for AUM was to work the ball into the paint which worked well as the Senators shot 65 percent in the second half and finished the game shooting 59.2 (29-48) percent from the field. AUM out-scored William Jewell 40-26 in the paint.

 

AUM only took eight three point shots for the game, and once the game got into the final minutes, the Senators hit their free throws. AUM knocked down 23 of 30 at the charity stripe.

 

Johnson scored his 19 points on eight-of-10 shooting from the field and hitting three free throws. Quadavious Brown scored 18 points and Kip Small had another solid performance for the Senators with 17 points, six rebounds and four assists.

 

Nathan Thomas scored 10 points on five-of-six shooting and tied Johnson for game-high honors in rebounds with seven.

 

Alex Bernskoetter had a team-high 14 points for William Jewell and Larry Mandacina finished with 11.

 

The Senators (27-6) will now face eighth-seeded Robert Morris (26-3) in the round of eight tomorrow at 1 p.m. Robert Morris defeated Tougaloo 89-69 for its second round victory. William Jewell ends its season with a 23-11 record.
