
ROME, Ga. -- Led by Jayne Curtis' 75, the Berry women's golf team jumped out to a 32-stroke lead after the first round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Women's Golf Tournament on Monday. The 36-hole tournament is being hosted by Berry on the 6,050-yard, par-72 layout of Rome's Coosa Country Club.
Berry's team score of 308 is 32 strokes better than second-place Shorter, which carded a 340 in the first round. There are only three teams and 17 players competing in the SSAC Tournament. Lee is third with a score of 356 and Reinhardt, which fields a team of just three players, did not post a team score.Julie Donnestad from Lee is leading the way with a score of 74 after the first round. Curtis and Lee's Rachel Ingram, are tied for second after both players shot 75 on the day. Berry's Callie Bennett and Gwen Wiencek are tied for third after both players carded a 77 on the opening day.
Berry's Caysie Holley is sixth with a score of 79. Elizabeth Gemmill is tied for eighth place after shooting 82 in her round.
The tournament concludes tomorrow at Coosa Country Club. The winning
team will automatically advance to the NAIA Tournament along with the
individual winner, if she is not a member of the winning team.
