
MARIETTA, Ga. - A first half goal by Senior Midfielder Scott Anderson was the game winner, as the Hornets defeated the Byran College Lions, 1-0 at Nuesoft Technologies Field on Saturday November 21. The victory sends the Horents to Fresno, California for a match versus Martin-Methodist on Tuesday December 1st.
As the match began, the Hornets seemed in complete control as the created a number of very good chances. Freshman Forward, Emeka Maduka dribbled two defenders and found himself alone with the Lions GK, yet his shot hit the post. Minutes later, Senior Midfielder, Felipe Lopez was taken down in the Lions penalty box. However, the ensuing PK by Anderson, was blocked by the Lions GK. The rebound was corralled by Sean Grisham who shot it first time. Again, the Lions GK came up with a huge save one on one save.
The Hornets goal came twelve minutes later as a crossed ball to the far post was headed back to the middle of the goal, where Marcos Mendez flicked it over the out stretched GK and in front of Anderson, who finished it in heavy traffic.
Just minutes before halftime, Lopez was shown his second yellow card, which forced the Hornets to play a man down for the last 48 minutes. Therefore, the second half saw SPSU sitting back and counter attacking, creating some very good chances. However, the score stayed the same and the Hornets advanced to the sweet 16.
