SWU Softball players construct a wall at a Habitat for Humanity house

CENTRAL, S.C. - As the Southern Wesleyan Softball team prepares for their season opener which is at home on February 4, they took time away from the softball diamond to help a local family in need.

This past Saturday, the Warriors participated in a "Women Build" for Habitat for Humanity and spent several hours assisting in the building of a house for a family in the town of Liberty, S.C. which is seven miles from the Southern Wesleyan campus. During their time at the project site, the softball team worked on the framing of the front and back walls of the house. They attached plywood to the walls and were able to raise the walls into addition. The softball team was not the only team group of students representing Southern Wesleyan University as there were three other students from the university who assisted with the project.

Head Coach Ed Deugan said, "This was a great opportunity for the women of the Southern Wesleyan University Softball program to reach out to our community while also gaining a new experience and perspective."

Cristy Hudson, a sophomore from Goose Creek, S.C., said "It was a great experience and it really helped us come together as a team, especially with so many new players. It was a tremendous accomplishment to help a family in need of a home."

Rebecca McGuire, a freshman who is a resident of Liberty, added, "Being from Liberty, it was a unique opportunity for me to work on a house in my hometown. As for the team experience, it was awesome to put up the walls and know we were helping out a local family."

The work of the softball team is not done as they will return on Thursday, March 4 during spring break to provide further assistance towards the completion of the house.
