ROME, Ga. -- Shelby Farrer had
15 points to lead the third-seeded Shorter team to a 59-53 win over
sixth-seeded Southern Wesleyan in the first game of the Southern States
Athletic Conference Tournament on Thursday at Darlington's Huffman
Athletic Center.
Shorter is now 22-8, while Southern Wesleyan finishes the season 14-14.
The Lady Hawks led by as many as 10 points in the second half, but had
to survive a furious comeback by the Lady Warriors, who cut the lead to
just two points on a basket by Kesha Smith with 50 seconds left in the
game.
Southern Wesleyan had a shot to tie the game, but the Shorter defense
clamped down and Ashley Harris and Whitni Tucker hit their free throws
down the stretch to seal the win for the Lady Hawks. Harris was 6-of-6
at the free-throw line to lead a Shorter squad that was 13-of-17 (81
percent) from the free-throw line, while Southern Wesleyan was just
4-of-10.
Natasha Eddings had 14 points to lead the Lady Warriors. Kayla Plantin
scored eight points and pulled in nine rebounds to help SWU to a 43-47
rebounding edge that included 16 offensive boards.
Holly Bawden had 10 points, six rebounds and three blocks. Kelly
Ellison finished with nine points and a game-high six assists. Tucker
also finished with nine points
The Lady Hawks will face the winner of the 2:30 game between No. 2-seed
Southern Polytechnic State and No. 7 Brenau. The winners will play
tomorrow at the Forum on the River at 2 p.m..
