ROME, Ga. -- The top-seeded Lee Lady Flames survive a last-second buzzer beater to win 65-63 over eighth-seeded Brewton Parker at Darlington's Huffman Athletic Center on Thursday.
The Lady Flames improve to 27-4 with the win, while the Lady Barons finish up the season with an 11-20 mark.
Trailing by five points with four seconds to play, Brewton Parker's Ashauntae Bussey hit a 3-pointer to make it a one possession game. Bussey then stole the ball on the inbound pass with two seconds left on the clock and launched a 3-pointer that would have won the game. The entire Van Es Arena held its collective breath as the shot hit the back of the iron, but did not go in, allowing Lee to advance with a two-point win.
Brooke McKinnon hit what turned out to be the game-winning free throws and finished with a team-high 17 points and seven rebounds. Kally Eldridge came off the bench to knock down three key 3-pointers and scored 13 points.
Brewton Parker started the game as the aggressor and led by as many as 14 points as their smothering defense held the No. 10-ranked team in the nation to just 19.4 percent shooting in the first half. However, the Lady Flames turned things around shooting 53.8 percent from the field in the second half.
Bussey finished with a game-high 19 points, shooting 7-for-13 from the field and knocking down four 3-pointers. Zaneta Howard finished with a double-double effort of 13 points and 15 rebounds to help the Lady Barons earn a 40-38 rebounding edge.
Lee had four players finish in double-figures as Katie Nelson had 12 points and Allison Rader had 10 points. Nelson and Rader were a combined 11-of-14 at the free-throw line to lead a Lee team that was 21-of-29. Brewton Parker was 11-of-21 from the stripe.
The No. 1-seed Lady Flames will play in the semifinal tomorrow at 6 p.m. at the Forum on the River. Lee will meet the winner of the last game of the night between fourth-seed Emmanuel and fifth-seed Auburn-Montgomery.
