Faulkner coach Hal Wynn hugs his wife Rhea during dedication ceremony

Montgomery, Ala. - The look of emotion on Faulkner head coach Hal Wynn's face late Saturday afternoon spoke volumes about his day - and his passion for his Eagle softball program. Between games of a key conference doubleheader earlier in the afternoon, Faulkner held a surprise ceremony renaming the school's softball complex in his honor.

And with his family, his current team and many of his former players by his side, the usually reserved Wynn, who started the Faulkner softball program 19 years ago, watched seemingly in disbelief as the "Wynn Field" sign was unveiled on the scoreboard.

"I don't know what to say," said Wynn, who has won 555 games as Faulkner's head coach. "It's a great honor, but one that's not deserved. This university has done so much for me and my family, and then it goes and does this for me. It's just unbelievable."

Wynn, who has worked at the university for 26 years, earned an associate's degree at Faulkner before finishing his bachelor's at Troy State University. He was  working in Faulkner's admissions office before accepting the challenge of starting the softball program in 1992.

Wynn's teams have won at least 25 games in all but two seasons and have won 30 or more games eight times. His impact on the program hasn't been restricted to on-the-field success, with his teams traditionally finishing among the nation's best in cumulative grade-point average.

Wynn Field underwent a $125,000 renovation prior to the 2009 season and is thought to be one of the nicest on-campus facilities at the NAIA level.
