April 29, 2010COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Southern States Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year Joey Delgado threw a complete game to lead the No. 4-seed Brewton-Parker Barons to a 7-6 win over No. 5-seed Auburn-Montgomery in the opening game of the SSAC Tournament on Thursday.
With the win, the Barons (35-15) will advance to play on Friday at 4 p.m. against the winner of the game between Emmanuel and Lee. The Senators (25-23) will play at 10 a.m. on Friday in the double-elimination tournament against the losing team between Emmanuel and Lee.
Tournament Web Page Delgado (9-2) struck out four batters and scattered nine hits as he went the distance in the win. Kyle Mitchell (4-3) took the loss for the Senators despite striking out 10 batters in five and one-third innings.
Josh Barrs was 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs and a run scored. Barrs led off the fifth inning with an RBI double that sparked a three-run inning that gave the Barons a 6-5 that the team never relinquished. Kale Lewis came in to score an insurance run in the sixth inning that held up as the game-winning run. Ryan Hewitt was 2-for-3 and scored twice.
The Senators clawed a run back in the seventh and were threatening with two runners on and one out. However, Delgado picked off Chris Clements at second base and got out of the jam.
AUM took the lead early in the game, as Charlie Lester's two-RBI double made capped a four-run second inning that put the Senators ahead 4-2. Lester led AUM with a 3-for-5 effort at the plate that included a run and two RBIs. Justin Williams was 2-for-4 and Sam Judah was 2-for-5 at the plate for the Senators which out-hit the Barons 11-9 for the game.
The Barons took advantage of three AUM errors in the game. Defensively, BPC played errorless baseball behind Delgado.
The next game of the SSAC Tournament will feature No. 2-seed Southern Polytechnic against No. 7-seed Shorter in a game that starts at 1 p.m.
