April 29, 2010COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Gary Owens homered twice to help lead Southern Polytechnic State to an 11-0 victory over Shorter in the opening round of the Southern States Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Golden Park on Thursday.
With the win, the Hornets (46-9) advance to play on Friday at 7 p.m.
against the winner of the game between Faulkner and Southern Wesleyan.
The Hawks (23-31) will face the loser of the Faulkner and Southern
Wesleyan game at 1 p.m. on Friday.

Owens homered twice in the same inning as the Hornets posted nine runs
on the Hawks in the sixth inning before eventually ending the game in
seven innings due to run rule. Owens went 3-for-4 in the game driving in
three runs and scoring twice.
Southern Poly hit three home runs in the game and it was Edmond Sparks
who opened the scoring with a solo shot in the fifth inning. Sparks
finished the game 2-for-3 with an RBI and two runs scored for an SPSU
team that out-hit Shorter 12-3.
On the mound, Blake Mainor (9-1) picked up six strikeouts as he earned
the complete-game win for the Hornets. Blake Chapman (2-6) suffered the
loss for the Hawks throwing five and one-third innings with three
strikeouts.
The Hornets had four players with multiple hits in the game as Jake
Barrow went 2-for-3 and Mason Heller was 2-for-4. Meanwhile, the Hawks
did not have a player with multiple hits in the game.
The next game of the SSAC Tournament will feature the top-seeded Lee
Flames against No. 8-seed Emmanuel, starting at approximately 4 p.m.
