The Hawks trailed 3-1 before Morris' bases-loaded blast turned the score
around in favor of Shorter. With the two-run lead, the Hawks lived
dangerously, putting runners on in the next two innings, but did not
allow another runner to cross the plate.
Tim Day (8-3) picked up the win for the Hawks by pitching three and
one-third innings of scoreless relief and striking out four batters,
including Yamil Perez to end the game. Southern Wesleyan starter Chase
McElrath (4-4) suffered the loss despite striking out three batters over
six and one-third innings.
Aaron Plummer put the Warriors ahead in the top of the sixth inning with
a single that drove in Perez and Brauncy Jenkins to put SWU ahead 3-1.
The two RBIs for Plummer were the most on the team as the Warriors
spread five hits among five different players.
Kurtis Robinson was 2-for-3 at the plate to lead the Shorter bats and
also had some nifty glove work in the field as he made a pair of key
diving stops in the game. Joseph Brookes also finished 2-for-4 to help
the Hawks out-hit the Warriors 6-5.
The next game of the SSAC Baseball Tournament is between No. 1-seed Lee and fourth-seeded Brewton-Parker at 4 p.m. Both teams won their games in yesterday's opening round.
