April 30, 2010COLUMBUS, Ga. -- Third-seeded Southern Polytechnic State pounded out 15 hits in a 13-3 win over No. 2-seed Faulkner on Friday at the Southern States Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament at Golden Park.
With the win, the Hornets (47-9) head into a battle of the only two unbeaten teams in the tournament, when they face Brewton-Parker at 7 p.m. on Saturday. The Eagles (39-18) will now play an elimination game with rivals Auburn-Montgomery on Saturday at Noon.
Tournament Website with StatsSouthern Poly out-hit Faulkner 15-6 for the game and broke things open with a seven-run fifth inning. Edmond Sparks had a two-RBI single and Justin Ray followed it with a two-run home run to account for the majority of the damage in the inning.
Tucker Stone (6-1) picked up the win after throwing three and one-third innings of scoreless relief. Stone struck out four batters and SPSU starter Greg Hendrix struck out six batters as the duo combined for 10 strikeouts in the game. Mike Zenko (8-4) was the losing pitcher for Faulkner, striking out a pair of batters in five innings of work.
The Eagles put up all three runs in the top of the fifth inning without the benefit of a hit. After and error extended the inning, the combination of Stone and Hendrix gave up four consecutive walks to force in all three runs and give Faulkner a 3-2 advantage.
Eight of Southern Polytechnic's nine starting position players had a hit in the game, led by Gary Owens and Mason Heller, who both finished 3-for-4. Sparks was 3-for-5 at the plate and drove in four runs. Brandon Chastain also drove in four runs with a 2-for-5 effort at the plate that included a solo home run in the seventh.
For Faulkner Kenny Miramontes went 2-for-4 to finish as the only Eagles' player with multiple hits.
