Smith (5-1) carried the no-hitter through the first six and one-third
innings before Kenny Miramontes slashed a single to center field. It was
the only hit that Smith surrendered in the game, as he struck out nine
batters in eight innings of work. Eagles starter Johnny Montoya (4-5)
threw just two innings in the loss.
While Smith kept the Faulkner batters off balance, the AUM offense
pounded out 10 runs on 14 hits. After going 4-for-5 against Emmanuel,
Sam Judah continued to swing the bat well and finished the game 3-for-4
with four RBIs.
Michael Dugan finished the game a perfect 2-for-2 at the plate and hit
RBI double capped a two run second inning that gave Smith all the
cushion he would need. Bruce Alter was also a perfect 3-for-3 with a
two-run home run. Alter totaled three RBIs and scored twice.
Justin Williams also had three hits, finishing 3-for-5 and scoring three
times as the Senators out-hit the Eagles 14-2. Miramontes was 1-for-3
and Michael Clayton singled off of reliever Robby Davis in the ninth
inning to account for both Eagles hits. Despite, the low hit total, the
Eagles threatened with base runners in each inning, taking advantage of
seven walks from Smith and one hit batter.
The Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament continues on Saturday
with an elimination game between No. 1-seed Lee and No. 6-seed Shorter
at 3:30 p.m.
