May 3, 2010COLUMBUS, Ga. -- The Brewton-Parker Barons and the Lee Flames have been declared co-champions of the Southern States Athletic Conference Baseball Tournament after weather washed out the final game of the tournament on Monday.
The Barons (40-16), ranked No. 24 nationally, earn the league's automatic bid to the NAIA World Series as the team that had the longest unbeaten run in the tournament. Brewton-Parker went 4-1 at the SSAC Tournament, winning four straight games before falling to Lee on Sunday night.
The Flames (46-11), ranked No. 4 nationally, will also advance to the NAIA World Series as regular season champions of the SSAC. Lee recovered from an early tournament loss on Friday to win its way out of the loser's bracket and then beat Brewton-Parker on Sunday night to force the would-be deciding game on Monday. Like the Barons, the Flames also finish the tournament 4-1.
Drew Parker from Brewton-Parker was named the SSAC Tournament Most Valuable Player. Parker was 2-0 at the tournament and also recorded a save. He posted a 1.74 ERA over 10 and one-third innings of relief at the tournament and had nine strikeouts. Parker threw six and one-third innings of scoreless relief to get the win against Lee, then came on to earn the save in the final inning against SPSU. It was an exciting tournament for both ball clubs none more so than Brewton-Parker. The Barons won four straight one-run games including three that went to extra innings. Behind a complete game effort by SSAC Pitcher of the Year Joey Delgado (9-2) the Barons won the opening game of the tournament 7-6 over Auburn-Montgomery.
The team then played a 15-inning marathon game against Lee. Derrick Fox drove in three runs in the game including the game winner and Jacob Evors hit a ket two-run home run for BPC in the win. On the mound Delgis Soto and Adam Parker combined to shut out the potent Flames offense for the final 12 innings of the game.
On the heels of the game against Lee, which lasted 4:35. the Barons turned around to play another marathon game against Southern Polytechnic in a matchup of the only two unbeaten teams at the tournament. The Barons' Robby Kuzdale hit a two-run home run to force extras and the Barons scored three runs in the top of the 11th and held on to win in a game that lasted 4:30.
After finishing just before midnight on Saturday, the Barons took the field at 1 p.m. on Monday for a semifinal game against AUM. After the Senators had a two-out hit in the bottom of the ninth to force extra innings, Brandon Stevens smacked a two-run home run in the top of the 10th to win the game for Brewton Parker and send the squad into the championship game at the tournament.
As the regular season champion, Lee was the No. 1-seed for the SSAC Tournament. The Flames played like the top seed in the opener, beating Emmanuel 11-5 behind home runs from Tanner Moore and Junior Rodriguez.
The second game for the Flames was the 15-inning marathon against BPC, where the LU failed to score after the third inning. Tanner Moore had another home run for Lee and pitchers Scott Swinson and Aaron Everrett combined for 17 strikeouts in the loss.
Resigned to the loser's bracket at the double-elimination tournament, Lee pounded out a 17-5 win over Shorter in an elimination game on Saturday. JJ Costantino led the way as he finished just a home run short of hitting for the cycle and starter Matthew Gilson (9-0) remained perfect this season while striking out 11 batters.
In the semifinal round on Sunday, the Flames faced the Hornets of Southern Polytechnic in a meeting of the top-two teams in the SSAC Preseason Poll. Lee left no doubt with a comprehensive 19-4 win. Michael Brown had a pair of home runs and Moore added yet another long ball as the Flames pounded out five home runs in the game. Jose Cuevas was 5-for-6 at the plate to lead a Lee squad that pounded out 21 hits.
Lee faced Brewton-Parker in a championship game immediately after facing Southern Poly. After heating up the bats against the Hornets, the Flames continued the hot hitting against the Barons with an 8-0 victory. Moore added his fourth home run of the tournament and Molina also smacked a long ball to lead the offense. Meanwhile, some slick fielding by Cuevas and others helped Jaime Harper (3-0), James Rechenbach and Nolan Rudman combine for the shutout victory.
The NAIA Baseball Championship Tournament begins with opening round games played at host sites on May 18-21, with the opening round winners advancing to the NAIA Avista World Series in Lewiston, Idaho from May 28 - June 4.
