Norcross, Ga.- On Thursday, representatives of the College of Coastal Georgia (CCGA) were informed that they were invited to join the Southern States Athletic Conference (SSAC) at the annual meeting of the SSAC Board of Presidents in Montgomery, Alabama. The College of Coastal Georgia personnel had been invited to participate in the SSAC Board of President's meeting to discuss their official application for membership.
Dr. Valerie Hepburn and Dr. William Carlton, President and
Director of Athletics respectively, made a short presentation regarding the
application which included, but was not limited to, information about their
campus, academics and athletic aspirations. After thorough dialogue, the
SSAC group excused the CCGA leadership to deliberate a decision. By a unanimous
vote, CCGA was offered membership beginning in the Fall 2012 contingent upon their
acceptance into the NAIA and after a mandatory one-year provisional membership
year in the NAIA which is tentatively set for the 2011-12 academic year. CCGA expects
to sponsor 12 of the 13 SSAC sponsored sports when they become eligible during
the 2012-13 academic year.
"This is an outstanding outcome for our campus and our student-athletes," stated William "Bee" Carlton. "We have submitted our complete application packet to the NAIA. After discussion with the NAIA's membership chair, the campus visit from the NAIA is scheduled for Wednesday, August 17. After the visit, we anticipate having a decision from the NAIA by the end of September 2011. We are very excited about the promise of having strong relationships within the SSAC and the NAIA."
Dr. Kurt Patberg, Commissioner of the SSAC added, "Our goal is to be one of the premier conferences in the NAIA and we feel like the addition of the College of Coastal Georgia contributes to those goals. All of our dealing with their leadership has shown a true level of organization, commitment and professionalism as they enter this new era of athletic competition."
