GEORGETOWN, Ky. - The Lee University volleyball team continued their season-long surge during a weekend trip to Georgetown, Ky.  The No. 2 Lady Flames extended their winning streak to 27 games in two difficult road contests.

In the opening match, the Lee women faced an uphill struggle to come out victorious against No. 10 Georgetown College.  Some 20 minutes later the Lady Flames came right back to defeat NCAA Division II power, the University of Indianapolis, 3-0.

Georgetown jumped to a two-game lead, winning 30-25 and 30-28.  While Lee came close in both, the Georgetown women overcame the Lady Flames both times.  However, in a brilliant comeback, the Lee volleyballers would not be silenced, bouncing back to claim the final three games, 30-26, 30-21, and 15-8.  It was the first time all season that Coach Andrea Hudson’s girls had been forced to play all five games.

Assistant Coach Kevin Hudson remarked, “It was an extremely tough game for the team.  The 23 blocks by the Lady Flames was probably one of the team’s top five performances ever.”

Naiara Fernandes led the way for the Lady Flames, amassing 17 kills and six blocks.  Bruna Langner provided her usual impressive play, totaling 14 kills and a remarkable 12 blocks.  Daisy Varbanova had 10 blocks, while Bojana Vulin showed her versatility in recording 15 kills and 13 digs.  Missy Elser had 20 digs, while Courtney Williams added 16.  Senior setter Lisa Kidwell was her typical steady self, with 39 assists.  Kidwell’s understudy Katie Thornton contributed 17 more.

Georgetown College dropped to 20-4 with the loss.  The Lady Tigers were upset on Friday night by Lee’s former TranSouth Conference (TSAC) rival, Union University, tied for 20th in the NAIA rankings.

The Lady Flames returned to the court soon after the difficult win to face NCAA Div. II University of Indianapolis.  Coach Kevin Hudson explained, “After five-game match, the girls came back and gave a tremendous effort some 20 minutes after the first match had ended.”

The Lee women appeared to show no signs of fatigue in triumphing over the Greyhounds in three games, 33-31, 30-26, and 30-24.

Fernandes again led the way, with 14 kills and three blocks. Varbanova totaled 10 kills and four blocks, while Langner finished with 13 kills and six blocks. Kidwell had 28 assists and Thornton, a freshman, completed her big day with 21 assists.  Elser compiled 17 digs and Williams had 13.

The University of Indianapolis dropped to 16-7, while the Lady Flames continued their quest for an unbeaten regular season, with their 27th win against no defeats.

Lee will return to action on Oct. 13 against former TSAC foe Martin Methodist College.
