
It is on to another challenge after the Lee University Lady Flames pushed their overall record to 39-0 by defeating Berry College 3-0 (30-12, 30-22 and 30-25) in the championship match of the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament.
Ranked second nationally by the NAIA, the unbeaten Lady Flames advance to the championship match by defeating Faulkner University, 30-13, 30-18 and 30-19 earlier on Saturday. Lee will remain at Walker Arena and host the Region XIII next weekend.
Berry, an improving volleyball team, advanced to the final by downing Faulkner and earning second-place honor. It is only the second year of the Lady Vikes' program and first under the leadership of Nicole McCray.
Lee placed three players on the all-tournament team. Senior Bojana Vulin was named the tourney MVP. She was joined by sophomore Bruna Langner and senior Missy Elser. Berry was represented by Jamie Boze and Amanda Stiefel. Faulkner placed Brittany Barber and Ann Dickson on the squad, while K.C. Cheshire of Brewton Parker earned the final spot.
In Lee's win over Berry, Vulin had 14 kills, four aces, five digs and a block. Sophomore Naiara Fernandes enjoyed a big game with 13 kills and four digs. Daisy Varbanova and Rachel Clinton followed with eight kills each. Daisy also had two aces and two blocks and Clinton collected three blocks.
Elser posted 17 digs and five big aces. Lisa Kidwell set her teammates up with 27 assists and Katie Thornton was right there with 16 assists..
In the victory over Faulkner, Langner and Vulin each had 12 kills. Fernandes was very close behind with 11 and Clinton pitched in with seven. Kidwell collected 21 assists and Thornton did her thing with 18.
Courtney Williams stole the show with eight serving aces and five digs. Elser was the team leader with 21 digs and Kidwell added 12. Vulin joined the action with nine digs, while Langner added four blocks.
