JACKSON, Tenn. –
A near capacity crowd saw the first overtime game of the NAIA National
Tournament as second-seeded Union University (Tenn.) ran away from North
Georgia College & State University in the final frame and claimed an 83-75
victory at Oman Arena.
The Bulldogs held
a two-point advantage near the end of regulation until North Georgia
junior center Jeanine Dorminey hit a 12-footer to tie the game at 69-69 with
just six seconds remaining. Union had one more
opportunity before the end of regulation, as Jennifer Henson rushed the ball up
the court. Henson got a good look at the basket, but her three-pointer at
the buzzer hit off the back of the rim to send the game to overtime.
In the extra
period, the Bulldogs outscored North Georgia 14-6 to
claim the victory in the second round thriller.
After a field
goal by Megan Huffman to give the Lady Saints a two-point advantage at 71-69, Union
went on a 9-0 run highlighted by a steal and lay-up by Ena Daniels that gave Union
a seven-point advantage.
North
Georgia, playing in their ninth NAIA National Tournament, was led
by senior guard Katie Schleisman with 22 points on 10-of-16 shooting from the
floor including two big three-pointers that put North Georgia
back into the game with the Bulldogs. Brandi Owen added 15 points and
seven rebounds, while Megan Huffman added 15 and Dorminey added 10 points and
seven rebounds. North Georgia ends their season 26-8 overall.
Union
was led by senior center Stephanie Clark, who scored 27 points on 9-for-21
shooting as well as grabbing a tournament-high 17 rebounds. Merideth
Richardson added 19 points on 7-of-12 shooting from the floor, while Daniels
added 13 in the victory.
Union (32-5) advances to the
quarterfinal round of the NAIA National Tournament, where they will take on
top-seeded Vanguard University
(Calif.) (32-3) on Saturday at 6 pm (CST). Union,
making their 16th appearance at the NAIA National Tournament, reaches the
quarterfinals for the fourth time in five seasons.
