
Same title. Different verse. For the second straight year the Lee
University volleyball team has finished the Southern States Athletic
Conference regular season and tournament play unbeaten.
The Lady Flames will try to accomplish the same feat next weekend when
they host the Region XIII tournament at Walker Arena. On Saturday
afternoon, Berry College did not go away without a fight. Lee won the
first game 30-23 but Berry bounced back to take the second contest
27-30. Coach Andrea Hudson regrouped her forces and they downed the
Lady Vikings convincingly in the final two games 30-17, 30-21.
Lee placed four players in double figures in kills. Bruna Langner had
her biggest game of the tournament with 16 blasts. She also had one
assist, three digs, three blocks and two blocking assists. Ligia
Zobolli, who was a standout throughout the tournament, claimed 15
kills. She also had one assist, four aces, 11 digs, one block and two
blocking assists.
The kills didn't end there. Christeena Bertinetti and Daisy Varbanova
had 12 spikes each. Bertinetti claimed six digs, one block and one
blocking assist. Varbanova had one assist, two service aces, seven digs
and two blocking assists.
Tara Dillon continued her fine effort as a starter. She replaced the
injured Katie Thornton for all the SSAC tournament games. Dillon dished
off 51 assists. Her impressive numbers included four kills, one ace and
five digs.
As usual, Courtney Williams was the leading defender with 24 digs. The senior collected one assist and three aces.
For Berry, Amanda Stiefel and Jamie Boze had 18 kills each. Ashley
Wedler and Rachel Moreau were the assists leaders. Wedler had 27
assists and Moreau had 20. Megan Francis posted 24 digs.
In earlier action on Saturday, Zobolli set the pace as the Lee
University Lady Flames volleyball team advanced to the final round of
the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament by turning back
determined Berry College, 30-25, 30-27, 30-25.
Zobolli had an outstanding match with 12 kills, one assist, one ace, 10
digs and one blocking assist. Bertinetti displayed her power with 11
spikes, four key service aces and seven digs. Varbanova added nine
kills and Langner chipped in with seven kills, two digs, one block and
two blocking assists.
Dillon continued to set her teammates up with 31 assists. Her
all-around game also featured four kills and 11 digs. Williams pitched
in with 21 digs and one assist.
Berry stayed close thanks to the outstanding play of Stiefel. She
racked up 15 kills and added 17 digs. Molly Cline had 19 digs and Erika
Hintermeier countered with 14 digs.
