No Big Surprises in Tennis Regional Championships

Montgomery, Ala.—Auburn University Montgomery was the host to the NAIA Region XIII Men and Women’s Tennis Championships as both AUM program easily moved into the championship matches.  And as expected, the AUM men and women will play in tomorrow’s championship.

With both AUM and Shorter’s men and women’s programs receiving byes into the second round, the other teams had to fight out first round matches for the chance to meet the first and second seeded teams.

In women’s action, the University of Mobile pulled off a slight upset with a 5-3 2win over 11th ranked Brenau University.  After Mobile won two of the three doubles, they then went and won at three, four and six singles in straight sets fashion to move into the second round to face top ranked AUM.

Southern States Athletic foes, Lee University and Berry College faced off in the other first round women’s match.  Berry took two of three in doubles action and cruised in for the 7-2 win.  They moved into the second round to face Shorter College.

In men’s first round action, Berry and Georgia Southwestern faced off and Berry easily won the match 8-1.  The lone GSW win came at one singles.  In the other men’s match, Lee University disposed of Spring Hill College 9-0.  It was an easy win for Lee, as they moved into the second round to face AUM.

In the second round action, AUM’s women had no trouble in moving into the finals with a 5-0 win over Mobile.  AUM won all three doubles in easy fashion and won in straight sets at one and five singles.  They will face Berry College, a 5-2 upset winner over seventh ranked Shorter College.  Berry, ranked 11th, began the match winning two of the three doubles matches and then won at one, two and three singles, all in straight sets to set up the championship showdown with AUM.

The AUM men defeated Lee University 5-0 to then move into the championship.  AUM came out and struggled a bit as Lee played well in singles matches, but the Senators were able to pull out 8-5, 8-4 and 8-2 wins to lead 3-0 after doubles action.  AUM then won at three and five singles to put the match away.

The final match of the day saw Berry and Lee face off in a match that looked as though it might go down to the final match.  The teams were even at two, before lightning and bad weather moved into the area.  At that time both teams were pulled off the court and play was suspended.  The two teams will pick up play at 8 a.m. tomorrow to finish their match.  The winner will face AUM for the championship.
