AUM Sweeps Region XIII Championships
Berry-Shorter Men Have Best Match of Tournament

Montgomery, Ala.—The Auburn University Montgomery tennis teams showed why they are at the top of the nation as they won the NAIA Region XIII Championships.

In the women’s action, AUM won all three doubles, although the one doubles match was tough as Kristin Hunter and Patricia Llaguno built a 3-0 lead over Kamila Dadakhodjaeva and Nadia Lysak, before the AUM twosome caught fire and pulled away for the 8-3 win.  AUM won the other two doubles by identical 8-2 scores.

There was never any doubt once the two teams got into singles play as AUM won at one, four and five as the one and four matches eventually ended at the same time.  AUM’s Dadakhodjaeva was named the NAIA Region XIII Player-of-the-Year and AUM’s Scott Kidd was named the Coach-of-the-Year.  AUM’s entire team was named to the All-Region team as was Berry’s Kristin Hunter.

There was not much doubt in the men’s game either, as AUM pulled out a 5-0 win with each singles match being straight sets and Berry only winning three games in the doubles play.  The scores in doubles was 8-0, 8-2, 8-1 and singles matches were won at two and six by Anton Brykalin and Timothy Mudrick.

AUM’s Victor Sanakai Papi was named the NAIA Region XIII Player-of-the-Year and AUM coach Anuk Christianz was named the Region XIII Coach-of-the-Year.  All of the AUM tennis team received All-Region honors.

Berry and Shorter’s men began play on Friday evening, but only made it through four matches before bad weather forced the suspension of the match.  With the score tied at two, both teams picked up their matches this morning with the match in doubt until the final match at two singles where Christian Jackie defeated Juan Pablo Vidour 6-3, 5-6, 6-4 to give Berry the winning fifth game.  The match between the two teams was the best match of the tournament.
