Jonathan Webster drove in five runs to lead Berry to a 16-7 victory over Faulkner and the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament championship Sunday in Americus.
The Vikings needed just three innings to put the game out of reach, jumping out to an 11-0 lead after scoring two runs in the top of the first, six in the second and three in third. After allowing a run in the bottom of the third, the Vikes added two more in the fourth, plus a pair of runs in the eighth and one in the ninth.
Berry pounded out 16 hits in the game, four by senior catcher Britt Hubier, who went 4-for-5 with two runs batted in. Ben Kendrick had three hits and an RBI. Both Hubier and Kendrick scored twice.
Webster, was 2-for-6 in the contest, belting a home run, and Nathan Freeman belted a titanic blast in the first inning to get the game started off on the right foot for the Vikings.
Berry starter Patrick Guillory (5-7) earned the victory. Working on a pre-determined pitch count, Guillory allowed five runs in 4 1/3 innings, with only three runs earned against Guillory.
Charlie Seamans and Jeremy Cameron each pitched 2 1/3 innings of relief. Seamans allowed two runs on five hits while striking out two batters. Cameron did not allow a run on three hits. He fanned one batter.
Berry chased Faulkner starter Will Cabaniss after just 1 1/3 innings. The second team All-Conference selection allowed eight runs (six earned) on seven hits and a walk while striking out one batter.
The Vikings streaked to the championship by winning five of its six games. Berry opened with a win over Georgia Southwestern, but dropped to the loser's bracket after falling to Southern Poly Thursday. But the Vikes finished with a four-game winning streak to earn the championship, beating Shorter Friday, and Faulkner and Lee Saturday before topping the Eagles again Sunday for the crown.
The victory improves the Vikings' record to 33-24 overall and gets Berry a berth in the NAIA Region XIII Tournament May 10-13.
The regional appearance will mark the third consecutive season in which Berry reached the regional tournament.
