LSU-Shreveport Cruises Past Lee Into Championship

Montgomery, Ala.—For the second time in four days, Kevin Jewell pitched a jewel of a game against Lee University as he led LSU-Shreveport to an 8-5 win and a spot in the NAIA Region XIII Championship game.

Jewell sent the Flames into the elimination round by defeating them 1-0 in the opening round, and this time his performance helped knock the Flames out of the tournament.  He pitched 7.1 innings allowing only seven hits and five runs, with only two earned.  He had 10 strikeouts and only walked one batter.

LSUS actually built a 6-2 lead heading into the eighth inning when things began to unwind.  Lee loaded the bases with only one out and Travis Simmons hit an easy one hopper back to Jewell on the mound.  What should have been an easy double play turned into an adventure as Jewell tossed the ball over catcher Brent Lavalee’s head allowing two runs to score on the play.  Bryan Cooksey then knocked in a run with a ground out before LSUS got out of the inning.  But they only held a 6-5 lead entering the ninth.

Lavalee took matters into his own hands with a two run blast in the top of the inning to give LSUS their extra cushion and they took out Lee in the bottom of the inning to move into the championship game.

Dusty Maddox and Steffan Primeaux led the 10 hit attack with two hits each.  Primeax and Lavalee had two RBI’s in the win, while Jewell picked up his ninth win of the season and Matt Clayman pitched the final 1.2 innings to record his fifth save of the year.

Andrew Shaver gave Lee an early 1-0 lead, as he blasted a solo home run on the second pitch of the game.  That would turn out to be his only hit of the game.  Aaron Simmons led the Flames going three for four at the plate and scoring two runs.

Lee’s season ends at 42-18 while LSUS moves into the championship game against Auburn University Montgomery with a 38-22 record.
