Montgomery, Ala.—Auburn University Montgomery has received the fifth seed in the 50th edition of the NAIA Baseball World Series. They will begin play on Friday, May 26 against fourth seed Cumberland University (Tenn.) at 1 p.m. CDT. All of the games will be played on the campus of Lewis-Clark State College in Lewiston, Idaho.
AUM will enter the World Series sporting a 47-18 record. They are the reigning regular season champions of the Southern States Athletic Conference and are the NAIA Region XIII Champions. They competed against Embry-Riddle this past week in Daytona Beach, Fla., for the NAIA South Atlantic Super Regional Championship. They won the first game against the Eagles, who enter the World Series with the top ranking.Embry-Riddle University (Fla.) retains its top seed for the second successive year at the 2006 AVISTA-NAIA Baseball World Series. The national championship will be staged for the seventh consecutive year at Harris Field on the campus of Lewis-Clark State College. LC State also hosted the series from 1984-1991. In honor of the 50th Anniversary, baseball icon Buck O’Neil will be the keynote speaker for the opening banquet on May 25.
Embry-Riddle is shooting for its first baseball title after finishing as runner-up last year. University of British Columbia slides in as the tournament’s second seed and host Lewis-Clark State sits as the third seed due to bracketing procedures with a 42-6 record. The Warriors will be hosting a record 15th World Series, having won 11 national titles on their home field. Two more titles were won in 1992 and 1999 in Des Moines, Iowa and Jupiter, Fla.
Three teams from last year’s tournament return, Cumberland University (Tenn.), ERAU and Lewis-Clark State. Bellevue University (Neb.) is making its 10th appearance after missing last year’s tournament. Four other qualifiers, Auburn University Montgomery (Ala.), Lubbock Christian University (Texas) and Saint Xavier University (Ill.) have been absent for more than a decade. University of British Columbia, Concordia University (Calif.) and Seton Hill University (Pa.) are making their first trip to the tournament.
