In his fourth year as head coach for the Shorter College Hawks baseball team, Matt Larry has been named the 2006 Georgia Dugout Club NAIA (National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics) Coach of the Year. Larry, a 1993 graduate of Shorter, traveled to Atlanta on Saturday to accept the award. “This is an honor for me because the Dugout Club is such a part of Georgia baseball heritage,” said Larry. “To be mentioned in the same ceremony as the other award winners is really something.”
The Atlanta Dugout Club was formed in the early 60s and was later renamed the Georgia Dugout Club. Every year, they select a player and coach from each of the three NCAA divisions, from the NAIA, and from a junior college to be recognized at their annual clinic.
The Shorter Hawks baseball season begins on the road on Feb. 2, as they play Union University (Tenn.) at Brewton-Parker.
