CHATTANOOGA, Tenn. ... The Berry baseball team swept Tennessee Temple 9-4 and 15-6 in a double header on Wednesday. The win extends Berry's nine-game winning streak and gives head coach David Beasley 301 wins for his career at Berry. The Vikings are now 9-1 on the season, while the Crusaders are now 2-16 on the season.
Jamie Brown (1-0) got his first win of the season in Berry's 9-4 win in the opening game of the double header. Brown threw four innings and struck out a pair of batters, without allowing a run on three hits.
He was aided by a big offensive output by senior Jonathan Webster and Brandon Shelton. Webster, a native of Hoover, Ala., was 1-for-3 in the game, and belted a three-run home run in the game. He had four RBIs in the game, after driving in the another run on a sacrifice fly. Shelton also went 1-for-3 with a three-run home run of his own in the game for three RBIs and scored twice.
With the lead, Berry turned the game over to Chris Cuzzourt (0-0) who pitched the final three innings of the game. He struck out two batters, but allowed four earned runs to score.
That win clinched win No. 300 for head coach David Beasley. He already has the most total wins in Berry baseball history.
In game two the Vikings' bats came alive, with a 15-6 win over the Crusaders. Matthew McCalley (1-0) got his first win of the season in relief of Chris Rearick. A freshman, Mcalley is one of the Vikings' top relievers this season and leads the team with two saves this season.
After pitching the first game, Brown batted in the second game, going 2-for-2 with a pair of walks in the game. He belted a two-run home run for the Vikings and scored three runs.
Mitch Terry also went 2-for-2 in the game with a three-run home run and a double as he had four RBIs in the game. The Vikings, which had hit just two home runs over the first eight games of the season, hit four over the course of the double header with Tennessee Temple.
Webster continued to bat well in the game hitting a pair of doubles as he finished the game 2-for-2 with a pair of RBIs and two runs scored. Webster, who hit .545 last week is now batting .562 and slugging better than 1.000 over the last five games. In that five-game span six of his nine hits have been for extra bases and he has driven in 11 runs.
Randall Stallings rounded out the group of players that went a perfect 2-for-2 in the game. The sophomore from Armuchee, Ga. slapped a pair of singles in the game.
Matt Thomas, Chris Looney and Ryan Starr all went 2-for-3 in the game, as Berry belted 17 hits in game-two against the Crusaders. Coach Beasley is now in his 10th season as Berry's head coach. He has a record of 301-201-1 (.600) over that period of time. Last season he led the Vikings to a 33-26 finish and a 16-14 conference mark, as the Vikings went on a run to win the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament.
