JEKYLL ISLAND, Ga. ... Amy Goble was the overall medalist as she led the Berry women's golf team to the tournament title at the Jekyll Island Intercollegiate. For the Lady Vikings, ranked No. 7 in the NAIA National Poll, it is the first team and individual title of the 2006-07 season.
Goble shot back-to-back rounds of even-par 72 over the final two days of the tournament to finish with a three-day total of 223. She finished nine strokes ahead of second place finisher Jessica Urban from Wisconsin-Stephens Point, who shot a 232 over the three-day tournament.
Gobles' first place effort helped Berry shoot a 313 on the final day of the tournament to finish with a total of 947. Like Goble, the Lady Vikings also finished nine strokes ahead of the next closest competitor. St. Thomas (Minn.) shot 956 as a team to finish second in the tournament. The team from Minnesota is ranked No. 5 in the NCAA Division III Poll.
The DePauw Tigers - ranked No. 3 in the NCAA Division III Poll - finished third in the tournament with a total of 960. Savannah College of Art & Design, the only other NAIA team in the field, finished fourth with a 964 total. The Bees are ranked No. 14 in the NAIA National Poll.
In addition to the work of Goble, the rest of the Berry team had a strong tournament. Freshman Jayne Curtis shot 79 on the final day of the tournament and finished tied for seventh place with a three-day total of 239.
Elizabeth Gemmill earned a top-20 finish as she closed out the tournament with an 86, but still shot 244 for the tournament. Katherine Hooks shot an 81 in her final round and was tied for 28th with a score of 246. Jennifer Tallent managed an 81 to help the Vikings to the title on the final day. She finished with a total of 249 and was top-35 in the field of more than 120 golfers.
The Berry golfers are back in action this weekend at the Bash at the Beach in Daytona Beach, Fla. from Fri.-Sun. That is the last tournament for the Berry women before the NAIA Region XIII Tournament in Fort Gaines, Fla.
