NASHVILLE, Tenn. ... The Berry men's baseball team smacked 20 hits to out-slug No. 4 Trevecca Nazarene 20-15 on the road Monday afternoon. The Vikings' record improves to 22-13 with the win, while the Trojans drop to 28-8-1 for the year.
Chris Minney (2-0) got the win in relief for the Vikings. Chris Sutherland (0-3) took the loss for the host Trojans. Minney pitched five innings for the Vikings allowing just four runs and striking out three batters.
The Vikings exploded for seven rus in the sceond inning and never trailed from that point as the Berry offense was able to keep pace with a potent Trevecca lineup. Ryan Starr led the way with his 4-for-5 performance. He had a pair of doubles and drove in two runs, while scoring four times.
Two different Berry players had four RBIs in the game. Jamie Brown continued to play well, driving in four runs in a 3-for-5 effort that included a two-run home run in the seventh inning. Chris Looney also had four RBIs in the game as he went 2-for-4 with a triple and scored twice.
Eight different Berry players had multiple hits in the game. Jonathan Webster drove in a run and scored while going 3-for-4 in the game. SSAC Player of the Week Nathan Freeman was 2-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored to take the team lead with 29 RBIs this season.
Berry scored a run in every inning of the game except the third inning. Clayton Culpepper was 2-for-4 starting in left field. He was lifted for defensive purposes later in the game. His replacement Matt Thomas proceeded to go 2-for-2, while driving in a pair of runs.
Gunner Thayer tried to keep the hosts in the game. He went 5-for-5 at the plate driving in four Trojan runs. He also had a home run, but it wasn't enough as the Berry offense was too strong on the afternoon and took advantage of six TNU errors.
The win gives Berry a season split with the No. 4 team in the country. Earlier this season the Trojans won 14-3 at William R. Bowdoin Field.
Berry is back in action on Wednesday. The team hosts Bryan College in a double header.
