MONTGOMERY, Ala.--Chris Looney hit a two run home run and added another three hits as sixth seeded Berry College defeated seventh seed Shorter College 12-2 and in the process stayed alive in the first elimination game of the Southern States Athletic Conference baseball tournament.

Shorter College (28-28) actually had a 2-1 lead heading into the bottom of the third inning when the Berry (31-24) hitters decided to hit for the cycle in the inning.  Ryan Starr started the inning with a double and then he scored on a Jonathan Webster single.  Nathan Freeman followed with a triple scoring Webster to give Berry a 3-2 lead.  That is when Looney came to the plate and deposited a pitch over the left field fence for the 5-2 lead.

Berry took advantage of two Shorter errors in the bottom of the eighth inning to put the game away with seven runs, with four of those being unearned, with the final score being 12-2.

Looney finished with four hits and three RBI.  Freeman also had four hits in the win.  For Shorter, Dustin Cantrell had three hits and scored a run while Ryan Murphy had two hits and scored the other run.

Shawn Kimberly (4-6) pitched the complete game for Berry.  He scattered nine hits while only allowing the two runs.  He had four strikeouts and walked one.

Shorter starter Wes Ellis (4-9) took the loss.  He lasted seven innings allowing 12 hits and 10 runs.  Berry stays alive and will face the winner of the Faulkner/AUM game tomorrow afternoon at 1 p.m.  Shorter is eliminated with the loss.
