MONTGOMERY, Ala.—The wind was blowing out at the AUM Baseball Complex, and it showed in the first game of the day as Berry College and Faulkner University combined for five home runs in Berry’s 13-11 slug fest win.
Along with the 24 runs, the game featured 30 hits, eight doubles and five bases on balls.  The 24 runs are the most runs scored in a single game at the tournament so far in this tournament.

It did not take Berry (32-24) long to get on the scoreboard as Jamie Brown got a ball up in the jet stream blowing out to left field for a first inning grand slam staking the Vikings to a quick 4-0 lead.

Faulkner (31-23-1) came back to add a single run in the bottom of the inning as Adam Austin scored on a single off the bat of Will Cabiniss, and the race was on.

Berry built the lead to 6-1 on single runs in the second and third inning, but that would not hold up.  Faulkner batted around in the order in the bottom of the third inning, scoring five runs to even the score at six.  The inning featured four doubles from Faulkner hitters with Winston Stone and Cabiniss back-to-back doubles scoring three of the runs in the inning.  Ryan Duwe and Jonathan Gober also had back-to-back doubles in the inning.

That score held up until the top of the fifth inning when Berry took the lead for good on Chris Looney’s lead off home run.  It was the third home run of the season for Looney, the second of the tournament.

Berry then exploded for six runs in the sixth half of the sixth inning as Nathan Freeman hit a three run home run and Mitch Terry hit a two run shot.  It was Freeman’s 10th homer of the season and Terry’s third.

The 13-6 lead looked safe as pitcher Chris Minney had slowed the Faulkner attack when he entered the game with one out in the fifth inning.  He held Faulkner scoreless until he tired in the eighth inning.  Like Berry in the sixth, Faulkner batted around the order in the inning scoring five runs to cut the lead to 13-11.

The big hits of the inning were Winston Stone’s three run home run which was followed by T.J. Santos solo home run.  Stone’s home run was his sixth and Santos’ home run was his second.

Logan Tunnello came in with two outs in the bottom of the eighth and put out the fire.  He then retired the Eagles in order in the bottom of the ninth to preserve the win, and keep the Vikings alive in the tournament as they will advance to the next elimination game.

Rusty Mlls (3-6) picks up the loss while Minney keeps his record perfect at 5-0.

Faulkner will now wait until the final regional rankings come out, as they are presently the sixth ranked team in the region.  The top six teams in the region will advance to the regional tournament that will be held on May 8-12 at a yet to be determined site.
