MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Southern Polytechnic State University (44-15) came into the SSAC tournament looking for the tournament championship and they took one more step toward that goal today as they defeated Berry College (32-25) 11-5.
Berry broke out on top when Chris Looney scored on a sacrifice fly off the bat of Ryan Starr.  That lead did not last long as SPSU put four runs on the board in the bottom of the inning  The big blow came off the bat of Damion Overstreet as he hit a three run home run, his third of the season and second of the tournament.

SPSU added three more runs in the second as Tyler Eavenson connected on his third home run of the season, which resulted in two RBI.  The third run came as Daniel Griffin scored on a Josh Grooms RBI single.

With the score 7-1, Berry made the game a little closer as they added two unearned runs in the top of the third.  Ryan Starr was on second and took off for third; he came around to score on the catcher’s throw which wound up in left field.  Nathan Freeman scored later in the inning on Mitch Terry’s single.

SPSU answered with two runs of their own in the bottom of the fifth.  Collins Prescott scored on Joe Billick’s ground out and Eavenson once again scored as Ryan Pearson singled.

Berry would not go away as Caleb Swann scored on a Jonathan Webster single and Starr came around to score on a wild pitch.

SPSU thought the 9-5 score was a little to close so Bud Long stepped to the plate and was able to connect with a pitch and hit it well over the left field wall.  The two run home run was Long’s first home run of the season and pushed the lead back out to 11-5, where it finished.

Starr led the Berry hitters with four hits and in the process, broke the Berry single season stolen base record with his 37th.  Terry had two hits and an RBI in the loss.

Eavenson, Griffin and Overstreet each had three hits for SPSU in the win.  Overstreet had three RBI and Eavenson had two along with Billick.

SPSU stays undefeated in the tournament and will play the winner of the AUM-Lee game in tonight’s final game of the day at 7 p.m.  With a win in that game, SPSU will be crowned the SSAC tournament champion.
