MONTGOMERY, Ala.—Auburn University Montgomery (47-10) defeated Southern Poly (44-16) 6-2 and the two teams will meet again tomorrow (Sunday) at 2 p.m. for the Southern States Athletic Conference tournament championship.
Unlike the previous game where AUM scored 19 runs, the Senators pitching and defense pulled together for this win. Clay Long (8-1) got the start and went six innings allowing only a second inning solo home run to Damion Overstreet and a single run in the top of the seventh before giving way to Justin Barrett.
Barrett pitched the final three innings and only allowed one hit while striking out four in picking up his second save of the season.
SPSU starter Scott Morris (4-2) held the Senator bats scoreless until the fifth inning that is when the AUM hitters woke up. AUM strung together five consecutive hits, including four doubles as AUM was able to score all six of their runs in the inning.
The doubles came off the bat of Keith Sadberry, Junior Kelley, Paul Vasquez, Allen Ponder and Matt Keel. All of the hits scored runs, and the double off the bat of Vasquez was his 24th of the season which is a new school record.
With the AUM win, the two teams will face off again tomorrow at 2 p.m. with the winner being crowned the tournament champion and earning the automatic bid to the NAIA Region XIII championship.
