FORT GAINES, Ga. ... The Berry men's golf team shot a 293 on the final day of the Region XIII Tournament to finish with a score of 870. The tournament also served as the Southern States Athletic Conference Tournament. That means that the Vikings win both titles on the day.
The win also gives coach Brian Farrer a sweep of both the conference and region Coach of the Year awards. It is the third Coach of the Year trophy he has collected this season, after the Berry women's team won the Region XIII Championship by 46 strokes last week.
The Berry men's golf team won by 11 strokes over second place finisher Spring Hill, which shot an 881. Shorter, led by individual champ Joe Butler, finished third with a score of 882. Butler shot a final round of 68 to finish with a five-under-par score of 211 for the tournament.
Jason DeJiacomo led the way for Vikings on the final day with a score of 70. He was the most consistent Berry player over the course of the tournament and finished two strokes under-par with a score of 214.
Jarrod Trammel was one of two Berry players to shoot a 76 on the last day of the tournament. He finished an up-and-down tournament with a two-over-par total of 218. Trammell had the tournament low-round with a 67 on day two, but book ended the event with rounds of 75 and 76.
Sam Vautier shot the second-lowest score for the Vikings with a 72 in his final round. The sophomore, finished with a five-over-par total of 221 for the tournament. He back-to-back rounds of 72 on the final two days of the tournament.
John Hopper finished the day with a 75. He finished the tournament one stroke higher than Vautier with a total of 222. John Maupin equaled Trammell with a 76 on the final day of the tournament, to give him a total of 224.
The member schools of Region XIII voted for this year's All-Region Team. Berry's Maupin and Trammell were both selected to the squad.
Berry, ranked No. 13 in the latest NAIA National Golf Poll, now receives and automatic-bid to the NAIA National Championship. This year the tournament is being held in Plymouth, Ind. on May 22-25 at the Indiana National Golf Club.
