After claiming the NAIA Region XIII Baseball Championship this past weekend by whipping Belhaven College, Southern Polytechnic State University and Auburn University Montgomery twice, the Lee University Flames will host St. Thomas University (Miami Gardens, Fla.) in the Atlantic South Super Regional beginning on Wednesday at 6 p.m. at Olympic Field.
The Flames and Bobcats will face-off in the best 2-of-3 series to determine who will earn the automatic bid to the NAIA College World Series in Lewiston, Idaho. The second game is slated for 6 p.m. on Thursday and if a final and deciding third contest is needed, it will be played on Friday beginning at 3 p.m.
Lee brings a 48-12 record into the super region, while St. Thomas is 45-12-1. The Bobcats, under the leadership of coach Manny Mantrana, snapped the five-year Region XIV championship run of Embry-Riddle by whipping the Eagles 13-4 in the final and earning the right to face the Flames.
It will be Lee’s third appearance in super regional play. They lost at Spalding University (Louisville) some four years ago and were beaten by Embry-Riddle at Olympic Field two years ago. The Flames have made one appearance in the World Series (two years ago with an at-large berth). St. Thomas will be seeking its third appearance in the Lewiston event.
Lee placed three players on the All-Region XIII team, Andrew Shaver, Jeremy Hutslar and Lance Zawadzki.
