OLATHE, Kan. ... Three Berry tennis players were named All-Americans on Monday, when the NAIA released the All-American tennis award lists. Kristin Hunter and Patty Llaguno from Berry's women's team were named first-team All-Americans, while men's player Christian Jackle earned second-team honors.
Hunter, was named the NAIA's Senior Player of the Year before the NAIA National Tournament began and now completes the year by being named first-team All-American. Ranked as the No. 6 singles player in the country in the NAIA, she played all of her matches this year at No. 1 singles for the Vikings. She compiled a record of 19-3 (.863 winning percentage) in dual matches and was 20-4 in overall singles play this season.
Patty Llaguno also earned All-American honors for her play this season. Llaguno was rated as the No. 24 singles player in the nation in the final NAIA rankings. She spent the year at No. 2 singles for Berry and compiled a record of 15-4 (.789 winning percentage) in dual matches and was 16-5 overall in singles play this season.
Llaguno and Hunter paired to play doubles together and formed the No. 6-ranked doubles team in the nation. In overall doubles play this year Hunter and Llaguno lost only seven times for a record of 20-7 and a .740 winning percentage. In all matches played (both singles and doubles combined) Hunter finishes the year with a record of 41-13, likewise Llaguno ends her senior season with an all-match record of 36-12.
On the men's side Christian Jackle earned second team honors for his efforts as Berry's No. 1 singles player. Ranked No. 23 in the nation in singles, Jackle compiled an overall record of 13-12 during his junior campaign.
Jackle also paired with Andre Ferreira in doubles play to win the ITA Southeastern Regional and advance to the ITA National Tournament for doubles this season. The duo finished the year with an overall doubles record of 13-14. In all competitions this year Jackle finished with a record of 27-27.
Hunter joins Nicole Degner as only the second Berry athlete to take home both Athletic and Academic All-American honors this season. For the academic year Berry finishes with 15 athletic All-Americans.
