Berry College’s Meghan Francis and Lee University’s Katie Thornton and Christine Bertinetti won the weekly Southern States Athletic Conference awards for the week ending September 2, 2007.

Francis was named Player of the Week as she helped lead Berry to a 2-2 record at the Emory Tournament. Berry defeated Christopher Newport and Puget Sound before losing to University of St. Thomas, ranked 11th in NCAA Division III, and Emory University, ranked 5th in NCAA Division III. Francis was a force at the net, leading the Vikings with 48 kills and 19 blocks. Francis hitting was very efficient as she hit .343 for the tournament.

Thornton, the 2006 SSAC Setter of the Year, got her 2007 season off to a great start by winning the first Setter of the Week award. In Lee’s only match last week, a 3-2 victory over conference opponent Shorter, Thornton recorded 37 assists, two kills, seven digs, and one block.

Bertinetti, who is transitioning from outside hitter last season to libero this season, was a steady presence in the backrow for the Lady Flames in their victory over Shorter, totaling 23 digs and successfully passing 57 of 58 serve receptions.
