
Southern Wesleyan University’s Michelle Hayes and Faulkner University’s Shaleen Knight and Carrier Butler received the Southern States Athletic Conferences weekly volleyball awards this week.
Hayes, named Player of the Week, helped lead the Warriors to
a 2-0 week with 25 kills and a hitting percentage of .438. In Southern
Wesleyan’s 3-0 victory over Toccoa Falls, the junior middle hitter from Pickens, S.C.
had a career high 17 kills. Holly Hutcheson had a strong week for Faulkner University as she totaled 67 kills and
93 digs in helping Faulkner to a 5-1 week.
Knight has been named the Setter of the Week as she played a major role in the Eagles’ 5-1 week, including a 3-2 victory over at the University of Mobile where she totaled 40 assists and added 14 digs and one ace. Knight, a sophomore from Glendale, Ariz., averaged 6.71 assists per game and 2.04 digs per game. Other SSAC setters having strong weeks included Brewton Parker’s Callie Bynum who averaged 9.17 assists per game and Southern Wesleyan’s Kaitlin Wolfe who averaged 7.67 assists while hitting .389.
Butler earned the Libero of the Week award for her consistent play in Faulkner’s six matches. Butler, a senior from Pelham, Ala., averaged 5.46 digs for the week and chipped in with eight aces. Butler’s strongest match was in Faulkner’s victory over the University of Mobile where she totaled 33 digs. Other liberos with solid performances last week included Megan Johnson from Brewton Parker and Southern Wesleyan’s Keni Abercrombie. Johnson averaged 5.71 digs a game while Abercrombie averaged 6.0 digs per game.
