MONTGOMERY, Ala. -- Auburm - Montgomery's Sveinbjorn Jonasson's and Berry's Mike Wentzler were named the Southern State Athletic Conference Men's Soccer Players of the Week this week. Jonasson was named the offensive winner, while Wentzler took home the defensive award for the second week in a row.
Jonasson scored a hat trick against a tough William Carey team over the weekend. He was the catalyst behind the Senator's 6-1 win over their region rivals. For the freshman from Seyedeisfjordur, Iceland it was the first time he had scored collegiately. The win keeps AUM unbeaten at 3-0 for the season.
Meanwhile, Berry's Wentzler takes home back-to-back defensive player of the week awards for his spectacular work in the Berry goal, which helped the team go 2-0 on the week. Against conference opponent Southern-Polytechnic he recorded six saves, including multiple point-blank saves to deny the Runnin' Hornets an early lead. Despite facing three one-on-one attempts from the visitors, Wentzler did not concede until the 87th minute on a penalty kick goal, as Berry held on to win 2-1 at home. The senior from Duluth, Ga. then helped propell the No. 22 Vikings to a road win over NO. 23 Bethel as he recorded five saves in a 2-1 overtime win.
