KANSAS CITY, Mo. -- Berry goalkeeper Mike Wentzler was chosen as the NAIA National Men's Soccer Defensive Player of the Week award winner, the NAIA office announced Wednesday night. It is the first time that a Berry men's soccer player has earned the National POTW award since the 2004 season.
Wentzler was a key figure in Berry's upset over Lee. The then-No. 14 Vikings defeated then-No. 6 Lee 3-2 in double overtime on Friday. That win vaulted Berry up to No. 7 in the NAIA National rankings, which were released Wednesday.
Three times in the first overtime period against the Flames Wentzler faced one-on-one situations against Lee attackers and each time denied the Flames. The biggest stop of the game came when he stuffed Ricardo Pierre-Louis in the 96th minute. Pierre-Louis leads the nation with 20 goals in just 11 matches this season. The senior goalkeeper came out and picked the shot off Pierre-Louis' foot just after contact with a diving effort.
Wentzler finished the Lee match with seven saves. The win over Lee gave the Vikings a perfect 9-0 conference record for the year. That guaranteed the team of winning the conference out-right as regular season champions.
The Berry goalkeeper finished the week with 11 total saves. Earlier in the week, he posted four saves against Faulkner, as Berry won 8-0. It was the Duluth, Ga. native's fifth shutout win of the season.
The Vikings are 12-1 after beating Covenant 2-1 today and have not lost in nine-straight matches. Berry has now defeated the teams ranked Nos. 13 (SCAD), 14 (AUM), 15 (Lee) and No. 23 (Bethel) in the latest NAIA National Poll.
The Berry men's soccer team will travel to Missourri for a pair of Fall Break matches. Berry faces Columbia (Mo.) on Saturday at 4 p.m. The Vikings then take on Missouri Valley Sunday at 4 p.m.
