MT. BERRY, Ga. – Ricardo Pierre-Louis scored two goals, one in overtime, to lead the Lee University Flames to a 2-1 (overtime) victory over second-seeded Auburn University Montgomery in the semi-final round of the SSAC tournament on Friday afternoon. The Senators led for almost the entire time in regulation. In fact, it took a penalty kick by Pierre-Louis in the 88th minute to send the thrilling and highly emotional contest into the extra period.
Pierre-Louis and AUM keeper Nenad Cudic collided just inside the AUM box. After a lengthy discussion, the foul was called on Cudic and Pierre-Louis was awarded the one-on-one attempt. However, before the kick ever occurred, Cudic was hit with a red card. Teammate Thorarinn Borgthorss was also tagged with a red card minutes later.
Pierre-Louis drilled the penalty kick past reserve keeper Nik Chamberlain. The contest went into overtime. Lee was already playing a man short after defender Nick Odeny was hit with his second yellow card in the 82nd minute and sent to the sidelines for the remainder of the game. The Senators had to go into the extra period two men down.
In overtime, Pierre-Louis took a pass from teammate Stanley Nyazamba and drove it past the keeper for the winning score. AUM took the lead in the 16th minute on an unassisted conversion by Sigurjon Jonsson. The score came on a direct kick above the box and past diving Lee keeper, Michael Simmons.
The hard-fought battle saw Lee attempt 28 shots in the contest, but placed only eight on target. AUM managed 11 shots against the Lee defense and seven on goal. Lee keeper Simmons registered six saves. Cudic had five saves for AUM and Chamberlain added one.
